The Palo Alto Housing Corporation (PAHC) has provided affordable housing to the community for thirty-three years. PAHC was created as a nonprofit public benefit corporation in 1970 at the initiative of the City Council. Even then, there was a large unmet need for affordable housing.

Over the years, PAHC has developed over 650 units of affordable housing in all areas of the City and using all available financing programs. This housing is available for rent to eligible households of low and moderate incomes. These efforts have helped preserve diversity in our community.

Our newest and most visible project is Oak Court Apartments, a residential community of 53 apartments near downtown Palo Alto at Ramona, Channing and Bryant near the Summerhill Homes development on land formerly owned by the Palo Alto Clinic. It will accommodate low and middle-income families who work in the community. Residents will be able to walk or bike to work or public transit. We all benefit. Oak Court Apartments was designed by the renowned architectural firm, Pyatok Associates. The development incorporates Acorn House, a restored historic house which will be 100 years old next year. It now serves as the office/community center/manager’s housing for Oak Court Apartments.

Oak Court Apartments is PAHC’s third major development near downtown. The others are Alma Place, a single resident community of 106 studio apartments at 753 Alma Street and Webster Wood Apartments, a residential community of 68 units at Channing and Webster Streets. Other PAHC housing is spread about the City and can be viewed at the PAHC website, www.paloaltohousingcorp.org.

The City of Palo Alto and the community have been committed to our goal. As the need for affordable housing becomes more critical for nearly all income groups, the need for support grows. We continue to seek ways to keep low-income workers, moderate-income teachers, and other essential Palo Alto employees housed in our community.
